Elle loves reading books and has been a huge fan for quite some time. She has a few favorites that we read daily in our household so we thought it would be fun to do a little round up today.
Since the beginning, we have collected a lot of board books. They are especially great for early readers because they’re made of cardboard and much sturdier than regular books. It’s also easier for them to turn the pages and lift the flaps. I’m usually reading Elle’s favorites over and over again, so these types of books have really held up well.
Elle’s front runners usually involve colorful pictures, pages with minimal words, rhymes, textures, and flaps. I’m a fan of reading myself {after all I used to be an English teacher}, so it’s especially fun when some of Elle’s best-loved choices involve classics from my own childhood.
In no particular order, here are a few of our favorites and why we love them:

1. DEAR ZOO
We got this as a gift when Elle was born and probably read it at least 3 times a day. It’s a popular children’s classic and filled with simple text and repetitive phrases that resonate with young readers. We also find it interactive and fun with flips and touch-and-feel elements.
2. PAT THE BUNNY
Elle loves all the textures in this one. She has a lot of fun turning the pages to see what’s going to happen next. This is also a great classic from my own childhood and should make an appearance in every child’s home library.
3. PEEK-A WHO
This has been one of Elle’s favorite books since the beginning and is especially great to bring when we travel because of its small size. Each page features a die-cut window that holds a surprise every time your little one turns the page. Also the last page has a mirror and every child loves mirrors!
4. PAJAMA TIME!
We are huge fans of Sandra Boynton’s books because of the delightful characters and her flair for rhymes. This is a fun sleepy tale that is great for bedtime. It is sure to give your child the most pleasant dreams.
5. THAT’S NOT MY PUPPY
Elle especially loves the touchy-feely aspects of this board book. It is written in simple, repetitive text and each page is filled with bright illustrations and engaging textures that helps with development of language and sensory motor skills. There is actually a whole series and you can shop a few more here.
6. BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR. WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Elle loves all the vibrant pictures in this adorable tale. There are bright colorful animals on each page and she loves flipping through to see what’s going to happen next. We also like to go over animal noises so she can learn their correct sounds.
7. THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR
This is another fun one to flip through and such a great classic. Elle loves looking at all the different foods the caterpillar eats through. She also loves the end when it turns into a beautiful butterfly.
8. FIRST 100 ANIMALS
You might have noticed that Elle likes animals so she has a fun time exploring through this book. It will help teach your little one about the wonderful world of animals. Each page is filled with colorful real life images that are categorized by habitat.
9. GOODNIGHT MOON
This one is a classic children’s bedtime story that I grew up reading as well. It has been loved by generations over time and features sweet little poems about goodnight wishes from a young bunny while drifting off to sleep. The illustrations are vibrant and Elle has fun pointing to all the new vocabulary.
10. MOO, BA, LA LA LA!
This is another SandraBoynton book that Elle really loves. It’s a whimsical and hilarious book that features nontraditional texts and characters. She is especially fond of the cute animals and likes learning about all the sounds they make. It also comes in Spanish.

So as yo can see, Elle loves to read. These 10 are the ones currently on heavy rotation and are great for ages zero to two years old. I hope this post was helpful and would love to hear about any other books you think would be a good fit for a one year old. We always enjoy adding to our library!
