EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE PERFECT PIZZA NIGHT

Last week we made pizzas and it was such a big hit, that I thought I would share all the details. We actually do pizza nights a lot around here because they’re fun, easy, and obviously delicious.

If you have kids, get them involved. It’s so easy and they will have a blast making their own pizza. It’s also a fun idea for a date night in (especially during this whole quarantine time when you have no choice but to stay home).

There are a few key components you need to get it right including the dough, toppings, and tools. Let’s break it down:

THE DOUGH

Pizza dough is actually super easy to make, but if you’re not in the mood then there are a wide range of options for you. We love to get ours from either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. Both have great recipes. Don’t live near either? No problem! I’m sure all grocery stores carry some sort of fresh pizza dough option.

Another idea is to get fresh pizza dough from your favorite pizza restaurant. Just call and ask. Also with this whole COVID 19 Coronavirus going around, I feel like a lot of restaurants are offering take home pizza kits that include toppings, sauce, and cheese too!

When rolling out your dough, make sure you let it sit out at room temperature for at least an hour and use lots of flour on the rolling pin, dough, and area you are rolling it out in so it doesn’t stick.

Interested in making your own dough? This is recipe we like to follow:

EASY PIZZA DOUGH RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 package of active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of white sugar
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups of bread flour
  • 1 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a medium bowl dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy (about 10 minutes)
2. Stir in flour, salt, and oil. Beat until smooth and let rest 5 minutes.
3. Turn the dough out on a lightly floured surface and pat or roll it into a round. Transfer the crust to a lightly greased pizza pan or baker’s peel.
4. Spread with desired toppings and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
5. Let the baked pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving and enjoy!

THE TOPPINGS

There are so many different toppings to choose from these days. When we are doing pizza night, we like to usually make two different kinds. One is always cheese for Elle and then the other one is usually chosen from these three options:

Buffalo Chicken Pizza: Diced Chicken breast cooked in Buffalo Sauce, Blue Cheese, More Buffalo Sauce mixed with Tomato Sauce (we love to use Rao’s Pizza Sauce), Red Onion, Shredded Mozzarella Cheese.

Hamburger Pizza: Ground Beef, Diced Red Onions, Tomato Sauce (we love to use Rao’s Pizza Sauce), and Shredded Cheddar Cheese.
*Our daughter LOVES this one too!

Veggie Pizza: Sliced Mushrooms, Onion, Roasted Broccoli, Garlic, Tomato Sauce, and Shredded Mozzarella Cheese.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to making a pizza. Here is a list of popular toppings to give you some more ideas:

  • Sausage
  • Pepperoni
  • Mushroom
  • Onions
  • Green or Red Peppers
  • Black Olives
  • Sliced Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Anchovies
  • Fresh Spinach
  • Pineapple
  • Bacon
  • Pesto
  • Broccoli
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Buffalo Mozzarella
  • Fresh Basil or Oregano

THE TOOLS

There are a few essential tools you need when making the perfect pizza. We always cook ours in the oven (although the grill is another great idea) and like to use this pizza pan. It has holes in the bottom to help it get extra crispy. It’s also nonstick so that’s another plus.

Pizza stones are a good option too! We love this pizza stone and have had it for years.  You also need a pizza peel and a good pizza cutter (we have this one).
