THE 10 BEST TOYS TO BUY FOR A ONE YEAR OLD

Elle recently turned one in December AND also got to celebrate Chanukah and Christmas last month, so she really stocked up in the toy department. Today I thought I would share with you some of her most favorite gadgets that help keep her entertained all day long.

Since it has been pretty cold here in Chicago this month, we have spent a lot of time indoors, but thanks to so many of the toys below, Elle has been learning, playing, and having fun.

My daughter absolutely LOVES electronics and is a huge fan of anything that has buttons, colorful lights, sounds, and songs. Some of our favorite go-to brands for toys include LeapFrog, VTech, Melissa & Doug, and Fisher Price.

Today I teamed up with buybuy BABY to share our top 10 favorites below:

1. ACTIVITY GARDEN TREEHOUSE

Elle got this as a gift for her birthday and I have to be honest, I had a little anxiety when I saw the big box it came in. We currently live in a two bedroom condo and I’m usually not interested in BIG toys due to space. I’m really glad we decided to keep this and put it together because I honestly think it’s currently Elle’s favorite toy. It keeps her entertained for long periods of time and has a bunch of different buttons, noises, and activities all built in. I call it her disco dance party jungle treehouse and she is obsessed. It also was pretty easy to assemble which is a big plus for us as we don’t really like building things.

2. LEARNING LIGHTS REMOTE

As I stated above, Elle loves electronics and is fascinated with cell phones and television remotes. We got this remote awhile ago and it is still one of her favorite toys. I guess kids just love pushing buttons and watching things light up. This one has more than 65 songs and lots of learning responses. It is honestly the best $13 I’ve ever spent. It is also on the small side so it makes a great travel toy.

3. DANCE & MOVE BEATBELLE

When we first showed this to our daughter she was absolutely terrified, but now she loves it! It encourages your baby to get up and move, and I feel like Elle has even picked up some dancing skills from it. There are more than 120 songs, sounds, and phrases to teach little ones all about colors, counting and the alphabet through fun interactive play. We have the older version, but you can find the newer version here and the boy version here. It makes a great gift too!

4. TALKING DOG PERSONALIZED PLUSH LEARNING TOY

This cuddly and colorful interactive stuffed animal connects to the computer so you can customize the music and personalize the learning with your child’s name. You can also add favorites such a food, animal, and color. It is fun to use and has a wide variety of functions including first words, daily routines, early number sense, feelings, emotions, and animal recognition. They make a green version too for boys.

5. MY FIRST TOUCH AND FEEL FLASH CARDS

I don’t know why, but my daughter is absolutely obsessed with these flash cards. I got the animal ones as well as the color & shape ones for teaching purposes and they are such a hit. They are perfect for helping children develop early language skills and reinforces learning through touch.  They have large print and bright photos with familiar objects to help children recognize everyday words. There is a whole collection of these touch and feel picture cards and DK makes really great touch and feel books too!

6. PULL BACK CARS

We love toys made by Melissa and Doug so I decided to try these pull back cars. These are super fun and go great with Elle’s doll house. Each vehicle features a variety of colors and they are really easy to use. Just pull back one of the vehicles and then release to watch it zoom across the floor. These are perfect for developing fine motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination.

7. TOUCH AND SWIPE BABY PHONE

Our daughter LOVES electronics and is always going after our cell phones. Because of this we decided to get her one of her own. This one gives your child the opportunity to learn all about smartphones {hahahah}. It has bright colors and a touch screen that helps keep toddlers entertained for hours. It also has fun features like a pretend calendar, clock, and weather app. It is small and easy to travel with so a lot of times we take it with us in Elle’s diaper bag.

8. FARM FRIENDS HAND PUPPETS

I’ve mentioned before that my daughter really loves the Broadway & Me classes here in Chicago. That is when I first realized how much she LOVES puppets. These are fun to use when reading stories or practicing animal noises. They are also machine washable and easy to clean.

9. LITTLE PEOPLE DOLL HOUSE

I think every little girl needs a doll house and this is a great starter one for one year olds. The house plays music {even rap!} and has a ton of interactive elements. There are fun phrases and Elle has a blast opening and closing all the little doors, windows, refrigerator, oven, toilet, etc. There are lots of funny phrases and lights to keep her entertained. It also closes up nicely for easy storage.

10. SIT TO STAND LEARNING WALKER

Elle is still learning how to walk on her own so this has been helping her out along the way. We introduced it early on {maybe around 8 months} since there are a lot of fun functions on the front. She also really loves the old school telephone and all the colorful buttons, songs, and sounds. I’ve also been told that this is also a great toy for helping kids learn how to walk, but we haven’t tried it yet.

We have a few of these too for our little girl who turned 1 in October, and they’re all hits. I want to pick up those little flash cards though, those look fun!
