As promised, today I’m going to share all the ins and outs of childproofing your home. It is currently National Baby Safety Month so it’s the perfect time to discuss this topic. I started the process once my daughter was crawling and constantly on the move. Since I’m obviously not an expert, and just a first time mom, I turned to the specialists at buybuy BABY to help. They have so many knowledgeable experts at their stores to help assist you in anything you need. I decided to set up an appointment in advance and was able to walk through the childproofing process and have all my questions answered.
I was easily guided towards the products that would work best with my condo and explained in detail the benefits and instillation process. Obviously everyone has a different set up in their own home. Some might have houses, or basements, or stairs so you will want to figure out what products work best with your own home layout. I currently live in a condo so there are no stairs or basements to worry about, but we do still have a lot of concerns and unsafe spaces that needed a quick update.
We made a few new additions to our home, but one of my favorites has to be our amazing play yard by North States. In case you missed it, I went into more detail about it in this post. I put our play yard between our living room and dining room area, but it is also great for basements, backyards, playrooms, or even your living room or den depending how large they are. What I love most about this play yard is the fact that It really creates a safe sectioned off environment for your baby to crawl around and play.
Babies are curious by nature and want to wander around investigating everything. Obviously we want them exploring and learning, but we also want to keep them safe. Besides the play yard, there are a few other things we set up to help create a safe home for our baby. Below I’m sharing 8 products that helped get our home safe and childproofed for Elle:
1. OUTLET PLUGS
There are SO MANY outlets in your home and you MUST cover them all. My daughter is fascinated with studying these plugs for some reason. Why is it that babies just want to touch everything that is dangerous?! We got these outlet plugs to cover them all up around our home. They are clear, easy to install, and get the job done. We were told that as our baby gets older, she might be able to pull these outlet plugs off. If that occurs, we might want to get these to install instead because they are harder to pull off.
2. TELEVISION STRAP
We don’t mount our televisions and if you are in the same boat as us, then you need to strap them down to the back of your media console. We use these television straps in our living room and bedroom. The nylon straps help to secure your free-standing flat screen television to prevent it from flipping over. Each pack comes with two black straps and they are super sturdy and easy to install.
3. CORNER CUSHIONS
Sharp corners must be covered, especially if they are made of glass. Think about all the tables you have in your home: dining room table, kitchen table, coffee table, nightstand, etc. We have a huge glass dining room table in our home and found these to be extremely helpful in covering the sharp corners. Our coffee table is round, but we do have a a glass television console in our living room with sharp corners so we also made sure to cover them.
4. GATES & PLAY YARD
As mentioned above, we are all about our play yard for creating a safe environment that is sectioned off for our baby. Our brand of choice is North State and they have a wide variety of play yards and gates to choose from at buybuy Baby. If you have stairs in your home then you would want to use one of these gates, but FYI you need to drill holes to mount them on the sides. They also make these pressure mount gates to put between rooms so you can section off spaces for your baby to play in. They are much easier to install and there is no need to drill any holes in walls.
5. POWER STRIP COVER
We have a bunch of random power strips around the home and I found these covers great for conveniently organizing and covering up the cords. We have about three of these placed throughout the home, one in Elle’s room, one by the television in the living room, and one by our desk area.
6. FURNITURE STRAPS
It is recommended to mount all furniture to the wall, especially in your baby’s room. Elle is always trying to climb everything and pull herself up, so it’s important to mount your furniture so that it won’t fall on top of your beautiful baby. Most furniture these days come with the mount and correct brackets needed, but if not, you can find good ones here {similar to the television straps} and here. They are pretty easy to install and please do it for the safety of your baby.
7. CABINET LOCKS
Elle loves to explore and certain cabinets in our home contain products that she shouldn’t be touching. We love these cabinet locks because they are super easy to install and can be removed with the push of a button. They work with most knobs and we currently have a few in our kitchen and bathrooms {especially under all the sinks}. Also if you are interested in locking up your drawers too, we were told something like this is great to use.
8. APPLIANCE COVERS & LOCKS
As Elle gets older and taller, we were told that it’s important to cover stovetop knobs with something like these or these and other kitchen appliances so she does hurt herself or get into trouble. We were told this or this is great to use on your refrigerator and this is amazing for ovens. Also, these are perfect for any door handles you want to cover up to make a room off limits to your child.
So there you have it! I believe I covered all the bases, but as you know all kids are different and some might be more curious and mischievous than others. You can get a full view of all of buybuy BABY’s baby proofing products here. They honestly have anything and everything you would ever need. Also to see more photos of Elle’s nursery click here. Lastly, if you feel like I’ve missed something, please let me know! Thanks ;-).

We’re currently in baby proof mode as girlfriend is on the move! The giggles she lets out as she takes off melt me, but it’s nervewracking to make sure she’s not getting into anything or getting hurt. The outlet plugs are a must, and we still need a play yard. Awesome round up <3
